SRI AUROBINDO was born in Calcutta on August 15, 1872. He was educated in England, along with his brothers, for 14 years. Sri Aurobindo had begun the practice of Yoga in 1905 in Baroda. In 1908 he had the first of several fundamental spiritual realizations.
During his forty years in Pondicherry he evolved a new method of spiritual practice, which he called the Integral Yoga. Its aim is a spiritual realization that not only liberates man's consciousness but also transforms his nature. Among his many writings are The Life Divine, The Synthesis of Yoga and Savitri. Sri Aurobindo passed away on 5 December 1950.
In 1890 he passed also the open competition for the Indian Civil Service. But he left the Civil Service after two years and joined Baroda Service in India in 1893.
The outbreak of the agitation against the partition of Bengal in 1905 gave him the opportunity to give up the Baroda Service and join openly in the political movement. He was in detention for one year as under-trial prisoner in the Alipore Jail.
After he was released, he slowly withdrew from politics and moved to Pondicherry. During all his stay at Pondicherry from 1910 onward he remained more reclusive and more exclusively devoted to his spiritual work and his sadhana.
