Saint Mary's Basilica

St. Mary's Basilica - Another religous landmark in Bangalore

St Mary's Basilica in BangaloreThis Church situated opposite the Russel Market Square was built as a small chapel in by Abbe Dubois, but was later converted into an ornate Gothic style Church by Rev. L.E.Kleiner. By 1882 a fairly large number of stained glass windows from Paris adorned the Basilica, but were removed during World War II.

These were restored with great care in 1947. The Church was given the status of a Basilica in 1973 through a Papal order by Pope John Paul VI.

The Church is visited not only by Christians but people of all faith as the presiding deity Virgin Mary is supposed to possess curative and benevolent powers.

The Basilca celebrates St. Mary's festival on the 8th September every year.  On that day a car festival (chariot drawn by people) is also held.  The festival attracts huge crowds during the time and also during Christmas.
