Reaching Gokarna

Gokarna is a Hindu pilgrimage center and a popular beach-resort town in Coastal Karnataka. It is also close to India's popular beach destination of Goa. Find out the transport options to reach Gokarna below.

By Road

Gokarna can be reached by buses and maxi cabs from Kumta (36 km), Ankola (25km) and Karwar (59km) on National Highway NH 17. Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) also runs long journey buses from many cities like Bangalore, Goa, Mangalore and Hubli.

By Train

It can be reached by train run by Konkan Railway on Mumbai to Mangalore route. The railway station is 6 kms away from the town.  Only a few passenger trains stop at Gokarna (which is on the Konkan railway route).

There is a train to Margao in the morning (about 11.30 AM).

There a couple of other trains to Mangalore as well. Check Indian Railways website for train schedules and to book tickets.

Getting Around - Local Transport

Walking is the most common way to get around, as the town is small and compact.

It is possible to get to Om beach by taxi or rickshaw (100/-) but to get to the beaches beyond (half moon and paradise) you have to walk from Om. A handful of auto-rickshaws also ply the main road.

They tend to be expensive charging you as much as Rs10 per kilometer. So be sure to check and agree upon the fare (like other cities in Karnataka)
