Pondicherry

Tucked in the eastern coast of South India, Pondicherry is a former French colony that now is famous for the Aurobindo Ashram, Auroville, its French flavor, cobbled streets, and beaches. The Union territory of Pondicherry comprises of four different cities - Pondicherry, Karaikal (located in Tamil Nadu), Mahe (in Kerala) and Yanam (in Andhra Pradesh). Pondicherry city is the headquarters and capital of the union territory of Pondicherry.

Pondicherry is located about 160 Kms south of Chennai in Tamil Nadu. It is also referred by the names of Puducherry and Pondy.

You can still witness French influence in Puducherry with its street names, shops and the style of dress worn by the Police here. There are also many residents who speak French along with the other popular language of Tamil.

The Beach Road in Pondicherry which hugs the Pondicherry beach (Serenity Beach) is a favorite with the locals and tourists and is the most famous landmark of the city. Restaurants, hotels, antique shops and the Secretariat overlook the Bay of Bengal and the Aurobindo Ashram on the other side of the street; it is the best part of the city.
