Location of Bangalore

  Bangalore is located in the South East of Karnataka. Karnataka is located in the South Western part of India bordering the states of Kerala, Maharashtra, Goa, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Bangalore is bordered by Kolar, Mysore and Tumkur. It is also an hour's drive from Hosur in Tamil Nadu. The geographical co-ordinates are: 12.97° N 77.56° E.

Geography and Climate

Bengaluru is located at an elevation of 920 meters (3018 feet); this makes the climate here pleasant all year round, except perhaps a couple of months in summer (March to May).

The 2 main divisions of Bangalore are Bangalore Urban district and Bangalore Rural district though these terms are use only for official purposes. The total area of Bangalore is about 740 Square Kilometers

Rivers and Lakes

Though no major rivers run inside Bangalore City, Arkavathy river (which is a tributary of Cauvery river), is the main source of water for its residents. Vrishabavathy, a tributary of the Arkavathy carries much of Bangalore's sewage within the city.

Though many lakes have disappeared from Bangalore, there is still a handful that it is famous for. Ulsoor Lake, Sankey Tank, Nagavara Lake, Hesaraghatta lake, Adugodi Tank are some notable ones.

Transportation

Tourism

Bangalore is a relatively new city (about 400 years old) but it has grown to be India's most modern city. There is a lot to see and do in Bangalore. Many tourists coming into the city also use this as a base when holidaying in other South Indian destinations.

Bengaluru is also relatively small compared other South Indian Cities such as Chennai. However since about the last 20 years, the population and area of Bangalore has been increasing rapidly.

Recently there had been a proposal to create a "Greater Bangalore" (Bruhath Bengaluru) which brings many of the localities on the outskirts and outside the city to within city limits.

Talks have also been going on to reduce the distance between Bangalore and Mysore and develop townships between them. Bangalore's localities can be divided based on the directions.
