What are the popular tourist attractions and holiday destinations in and around Shimoga? - The first in the list of visiting places in and around Shimoga is the World famous Jog water falls (highest plinge water falls in India - 292meters). Jog falls is nearly 100 kms to the North-West of Shimoga town (almost at the border between Shimoga and Uttar Kannada districts).
Other places to see include, Agumbe, one of the peak point of Western Ghats, 825 meters (2800 feet) from sea level, is famous for sunset view. Agumbe is 90 Kms away from Shimoga town towards South-West. Sigandur chaudamma temple is also a famous temple located near Sharavathi River in the back water of Jog falls.

Jog Falls is the prime attraction in Shimoga district (It is the highest plunge waterfall in India). Shimoga is also is the location of the highest waterfall in India (around 1500 feet), located near Agumbe. The other important waterfall locations here are the Barkana falls, Achakanya fall,Vanake falls, Dabbe falls and Hidlamane falls.

The Lingamakkki Dam constructed during the British period in India is source of water for Jog falls. It is a source of a major hydro eletric power projects in Karnataka. The Gajanur Dam and the Bhadra reservoir are other sights to see here.
