Gulbarga (now known as Kalburgi) is a district in Karnataka. It lies in the Northern part of Karnataka, just below Bidar. It borders Bijapur (famous for the Gol Gumbaz) in the West and Raichur in the South.
Gulbarga is 613 km north of Bangalore and well connected by road to Bijapur, Hyderabad, Solapur and Bidar. A railway line connecting the southern part of India to Mumbai and Delhi passes through Gulbarga.
A Hindu city before the Muhammadan conquest, Gulbarga is a unique synthesis of two cultures (Hindu and Islam). Gulbarga still retains its historic charm. When Bahman Shah ascended the throne of Daulatabad, it was this city that he chose as his capital. He filled it with beautiful edifices, mosques, stately buildings and bazaars. The later rulers added to Bahmani efforts.
Gulbarga is generally hot and is is best to avoid it in the summer(March to May), unless you can tolerate the unforgiving Sun here
. The temperatures in summer soar between 40 degrees celsius and 48 degrees celsius.
June to September sees the South Westerly Monsoon hitting this town. The Winter / Spring Season from September until February is the best time to visit Gulbarga. This is also the best time to visit other destinations in the region such as Bijapur, Bidar and Raichur.

Monsoon: 27 degrees celsiusto 34 degrees celsius
Winter: 10 degrees celsius to 26 degrees celsius
Gulbarga is connected to Bangalore and other cities such as Bijapur, Bidar and BasavaKalyan in the region. It is also accessible to Hyderabad, the capital city of Andhra Pradesh.
Some Train Lines connecting South Indian Cities to Mumbai and other North Indian destinations pass through Gulbarga. Autorickshaws (Autos) are the best way to get around the town.
Taxis are also available but they are not accessible easily.

History of Gulbarga dates back to the 6th century when the Rashtrakutas ruled the region. But it is the Chalukyas who ruled for over two hundred years. The Kalachuri succeeded them and ruled till the 12th century. Around the close of the 12th century the Yadavas of Devagiri and the Hoysalas of Halebidu took control of the district.
