Gol Gumbaz in BijapurGol Gumbaz in BijapurGol Gumbaz is the most famous monument in Bijapur (Vijapura). It is the tomb of Mohammed Adil Shah (ruled 1627-1657). It is the second largest dome ever built, next in size only to St Peter's Basilica in Rome.

A particular attraction in this monument is the central chamber, where every sound is echoed seven times.

Another attraction at the Gol Gumbaz is the Whispering Gallery, where even minute sounds can be heard clearly 37 meters away. Gol Gumbaz complex includes a mosque, a Naqqar Khana (a hall for the trumpeters) and the ruins of guest houses.

Right below the whispering gallery, in the hall the dancers provided entertainment. Each tower consists of seven storeys and the upper floor of each opens on to a round gallery which surrounds the dome.

In the centre of the chamber is a square raised podium approached by steps in the centre of each side.

In the centre of the podium are the tombs of Muhammad Adil Shah II and his relations. To the west of the podium in a large apse-like projection is the mosque, also raised slightly above the floor level of the chamber.
