Goa Festivals and Fairs

The fairs and festivals in Goa are as diverse as they are colorful as Goa itself. Because of its mix of cultures, festivals of all faiths are celebrated with pomp and grandeur.

The most popular celebrations in Goa are Christmas & New Year, Easter Sunday, Ganesh Chaturthi (Chavoth-Konkani), Diwali, Shigmo and the Goa Carnival.

The celebrations of the Shigmo and carnival were earlier restricted to the country side but they have now shifted to the urban centres since recent times and are seen more as a means of attracting tourists. Celebrations for all festivals usually last for a few days and include parties and balls.

During the festivals, traditional Konkani folk songs have a special place though western songs are thoroughly enjoyed by Goans. Manddo, the traditional Goan music which originated in the nineteenth century, is sung and danced on special occasions. Goa is also known for its Goa Trance Music.
