Coorg Festivals

Cauvery Tula Sankramana, Shivarathri, Ugadi, Huttari, Kailapoladu, Shashti and Vishu Sankramana are some of the important festivals of Kodagu (Coorg) in Karnataka.

Kaveri Sankramana

This will be performed on 17th of October of every year in honour of Kaveri River. Cauvery is treated as God and worshipped on this day for continuance of her benevolence.

There is a belief that taking bath on that day at Talakaveri is as auspicious as taking a bath in the River Ganges. This festival is the most important festival all over the Kodagu (Coorg).

Many from different parts of the country come on a pilgrimage to this place during the festival time.

Kailapoladu

This is a festival observed during which prayers are offered to various weapons.

Since Coorgis are of martial race, this ritual is treated with reverence. This is performed on the Mahanavami day during the Dasara (10-day festival).

Huttari (Puttari)

This is another important harvest festival of Kodagu (Coorg). This is performed on full moon day every year in the month of November/December generally.

This is a festival of harvest. On that day the whole of Kodagu (Coorg) will be in a festive mood and people will enjoy, eating, drinking and dancing.
