Where is Bidar

Bidar is located in the northeastern part of the state of Karnataka, in the southern region of India. It is 669 km from Bangalore (Bengaluru) and 136 km from Hyderabad. It is located 2,200 feet above sea level on a plateau overlooking the Manjira River valley.

Climate

The climate of Bidar is temperate with summers (April-June) being moderately hot and winters cool and pleasant (November-February). It experiences southwestern monsoon rains in the months of May to July.  Temperatures range between 25* celcius in the cooler months(October - February) to a high of around 45* celcius during Summer. Carry lots of water during your travel. Wear loose cotton clothing and protect yourself from the Sun through wide hats and goggles.

Reaching Bidar

By Road: Bidar is connected by road to most places in south India. Major connections are to Hyderabad (136 kms), Bangalore (Bengaluru) (669 kms), Bijapur (280 kms), Basavakalyan (73 kms). State Govt (KSRTC) buses ply between Bidar at Bangalore (Bengaluru), Bijapur, Gulbarga, Raichur and Sholapur. 

By Rail: Bidar is connected by rail with Bangalore (Bengaluru), Bombay and Hyderabad.

By Air: The nearest airport is Hyderabad (136 kms).

Getting around

One can take cycle-rickshaw or auto-rickshaw to move in the town. 

Staying and Accommodation

Since Bidar is not a regular destination of many tourists, there are very few good hotels and lodges in Bidar. You will find a few budget hotels. Some even have air conditioned (AC) rooms.

The prices range between Rs.100 for a single non AC room with attached bath to Rs. 500 for a double AC room with an attached bath. 

Fairs and Festivals 

Thousands of devotees throng to Humnabad during Veerabhadreshwara Jatra, which is a local fair. This annual fair is held for seven days during January-February.  

Art & Culture

Bidar is famous for being the place where Bidriware, a form of silver filigree art, originated. Bidriware is silver filigree done in Islamic motifs and set against a dark background of blackened zinc, tin, copper and lead to create the most striking ashtrays, boxes, bangles and such.

Sight seeing in Bidar

The most convenient way to begin your sightseeing is from the Bidar Fort. Bidar Fort- Bidar Fort has five darwazas (gates) with imposing bastions lead into a little town nestling within the ramparts. Ahmad Wali Shah built this fort and the well laid out gardens and other monuments within it, in 1429. There are important palaces within the ramparts of the fort.
