Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary

Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary or Muthodi forest reserve is located 38 Kms northwest of Chikamagalur and is a must for wildlife enthusiasts. It is about 375 Kms from Bangalore. You can visit Bhadra during a weekend getaway from Bangalore along with other sights in Chikamagalur.

Gaur, chital, Sambar, elephants and tigers are some of the wildlife found here. The sanctuary is surrounded by Mullaianagiri, Hebbegiri, and Gangegiri and Babaudangiri hills and has the tributaries of the Bhadra River flowing through it. The western border of the sanctuary is adjacent to the back waters of the Bhadra Reservoir surrounded by scenic hills and steep slopes.

Wildlife and Nature Tourism

A diverse range of wildlife is found in the sanctuary like bison (Gaur), Elephants, Tiger, Leopard, Sambar, Chital spotted deer, Boar, Porcupine, Muntjac, birds like the Peacock, Parrot, Partridge, Pigeon, Munia and Bee eaters, and reptiles such as King Cobras and Indian Rock Pythons.

Nature enthusiasts can avail safari facilities at "River Tern Lodge", a Jungle Lodge and Resort undertaking of the State government. Also, do not miss the boat rides to the several small islands that dot the reservoir.
