Barren Island, about 3 hours from Port Blair has India's only active volcano. The Barren island volcano along with the extinct Narcondam sub-aerial volcano, also in Andaman Islands lie on a young (less than 65 million years before present) volcanic belt.

This belt is dotted with about 60 active volcanoes. The Island, about 3 Kms in diameter, has a big crater of the volcano, rising abruptly from the sea, about 1/2 Km from the shore.  Barren Island can be visited on board chartered/authorized vessels that start from Port Blair.
