Baratang Island

Baratang Island (referred to as simply Baratang) is located about 90kms away from Port Blair, the capital city of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It is the main attraction in the Middle Andamans.

Inhabited mainly by the local Jarawa tribals, this is spot where you can visit to get away from the regular tourist attractions in Andaman & Nicobar.

While on your way from Port Blair, you can see the local Jarawa tribals on the roa; it is advisable to not make contact and respect their primitive lifestyle. Dense mangrove forests, natural wonders like limestone caves and mud volcanoes adorn Baratang Island.

The main attractions here are beach at Baratang Island, the Limstone caves, mud volcanoes and the Parrot Island. The mud volcanoes are about 4kms away from the Jetty at Baratang. The limestone caves are reachable by a speedboat from Baratan Island Jetty in about 50 minutes. The fare is about Rs 200 per head for a two way ride. Parrot Island is another attraction here where a huge gathering of parrots return here during sunset.

Usually you can find travel agents and other tourists recommending an early morning, day-long trip to Baratang Island. This trip supposedly starts at 4am in the morning. Discerning tourists have advised that it is much better to take a bus and ferry ride to reach Baratang and then stay overnight.

To reach Baratang Island you can take a bus from Port Blair to Nilambur Jetty in Middle Strait. From Nilambur Jetty, you can take a ferry to Baratang which takes around 15 minutes.

There is also resort here called the Dew Dale Resorts which has about 16 rooms (cottages). There are AC and non-AC rooms available with hot water and cable TV. The people at this place also arrange for trips to Rangat, Amkunj Beach, Merk Bay and Lalaji Bay. The room costs between Rs 3000 to Rs 4000 per day. You can get in touch with them at dewdale.resorts@gmail.com. Check tariffs and book online at thier website - http://www.dewdaleresorts.com

Accommodation is also available at the government-run APWD guest house, Forest guest house and the Panchayat guest house. You will need to book in advance at the tourist office in Port Blair at these guest houses.
