Agumbe Travel Guide

Agumbe is located toward the west of Shimoga city is at a distance of 90 kms. The altitude here is 826 Meters, and the place is famous for its sunsets.

As the Sun sets, it takes on different colors and this is reflected by the Arabian Sea. This is one of the peak points in Western Ghats. Sunset view attracts many tourists to visit this place. The sunset view point is 825 Meters from sea level.

Travel Tips

Roads are a bit steep and sharp curves leads to this scenic place. There are no good eat-houses here except a petty restaurant. 

So you need to carry some snacks with you to munch.  People visiting Agumbe can also visit Sringeri (Chikamagalur district) as it is very nearby.

Recommend period of visit is from November to January.

Heavy Rainfall in Agumbe

Lying in the Thirthahalli taluk and the Malnad region, Agumbe is among the places in India that receive very heavy rainfall earning it the sobriquet, Cherrapunji of South. 

The rainforests of the Western Ghats 

Forests of the Western GhatsIt is also the home of the Agumbe Rainforest Research Station, the only permanent rainforest research station in India.

The renowned herpetologist, Romulus Whitaker calls Agumbe the capital of King Cobra.

An area near Agumbe has been converted into a protected area for Medicinal Plants to help in their conservation. 

Being a part of Malnad and Western Ghats, Agumbe and its surroundings are rich in biodiversity.

It is adjacent to one of the last surviving lowland rainforests in the Someshwar Wildlife Sanctuary and the Kudremukh National Park.  Many new species of flora and fauna are found in this region.

How to reach Agumbe

There are two ways to reach Shimoga from Bangalore (Bengaluru).

  1. Bangalore-Tumkur-Tiptur-Arsikere-Kadur-Birur-Tarikere-Bhadravathi-Shimoga
  2. Bangalore-Channarayapatna-Arsikere-Kadur-Birur-Tarikere-Bhadravathi-Shimoga

From Shimoga city, proceed to Thirthahalli (60Kms from Shimoga) and then Agumbe (30Kms from Thirthahalli). Agumbe is 90 kms from Shimoga on the border with Chikamagalur.

If you are travelling to Hassan and Chikamagalur districts then you can think of including Agumbe in your itinerary.

You can make Hassan as the centre place and travel towards Chikamagalur and cover the other tourist spots. Make sure to reach this place around 5.00 pm to view the sunset.

You can also plan to visit Sringeri and then Agumbe to reach this place before sunset. The distance between Sringeri and Agumbe is just 15 kms. You can proceed to Kudremukh Hill Station from here.

No accommodations are available in Agumbe.  You can choose to stay at Hassan, Chikamagalur or Sringeri.
